Trained!

A while back, I mentioned that Alex was potty training and wanted to give a little update on that. Partly because you might be curious (if you have time to wonder about such things), and partly because this blog is a journal for our family too. If we don't write it down here, we don't write it down...

Alex is completely daytime potty trained, including naps, outings in public, and school. He has been trained since the very end of August. He doesn't even need any help with toilet paper, flushing, etc. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how easy the process went at our house. I think it is because we waited for what seemed like forever for him to be really ready. It was tempting for me to give into the social pressure to "train him", especially when he was nearing three and just didn't seem interested. But you know what? We waited it out and I am so glad we did! I read an excellent book another mommy of a toddler boy gave to me called Potty Training Boys the Easy Way.
Such a great read and the perfect resource for a relaxed potty training experience. Check it out if you have a boy you think will never go.

Another incentive we used at our house? Candy. Straight up...lots and lots of candy. =) I was worried in the beginning when my pediatrician husband suggested such rewards that our little sweet tooth would be asking for M&M's after going tee tee until college. But, as usual, my husband was right and he has mostly grown out of needing a reward for number 1 or 2. Eventually, though, I started using 1/2 a stick of sugarless gum as a reward for number 2 and that made me feel better about all the other candy he was eating. =)

We are so proud of our very big boy! Such a big milestone on the growing up horizon.

Want my potty training advice for a toddler boy? If you have a boy and are worried they will never use the potty, don't fret. Wait till they are truly ready - which, for boys, is almost always closer to age three - and read the book I mentioned. And figure out a good reward. They might surprise you with a very easy training experience!
