Surprise Going Away

Our Connection Group friends managed to pull of yet another surprise party for us last night! (the first surprise was a baby shower for Alex) These friends are so precious to us and we loved the chance to hang out with them last night. One thing we will certainly miss about Iowa is our virtual weekly dinner parties with these friends. They really know how to party - good food, great fun, and sincere fellowship. Oh, how we will miss them! Thanks again to all of our friends who chipped in to make last night very special for our family.

p.s. We missed you, Carolyn, Gabe & Grace!

A Day at the Park...in November!

The weather was so gorgeous today we spent all morning outside at the park. Hooray for sunshine and warmer temps in November!

Alex still loves to swing.

Enjoying one of his favorite park activities...attempting to eat ALL the rocks. Or at least taste them.

Just hanging out in the grass.

Big brown eyes!

This boy has his Daddy's straight hair and long eyelashes.

2 Weeks & Counting

Hard to believe that we will be leaving Des Moines in 2 weeks! We have finally secured a house in Houston and are looking forward to finishing up details here in Des Moines. Thankfully the weather has been amazing this November in Des Moines. We are enjoying lots of time outside at the park and lots of sunshine. In fact, the weather has been so good that our friends jokingly told us last night that God was trying to show us we have made a mistake in planning to move. =)

A little about our new place in Houston: Jason will be about a 5 minute drive from the Medical Center, and even better, a 4 mile bike ride! Our house is about a block from the bike trail in Houston that goes straight into downtown and the Med Center. We are also about a block from a great park, down the street from Whole Foods, and Chick-Fil-A....can it get any better?! We will have 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, so it will be nice to spread out a bit. As a bonus, our yard is filled with 2 pecan trees, a magnolia tree, and 2 lemon trees. Perhaps the most exciting thing is that we won't have to climb three flights of stairs to get to our front door. Don't get me wrong, I have LOVED our third floor condo in Des Moines, but the thought of walking about 10 paces from my car to my front door is quite exciting.

We are on the countdown now!

Bumps & Bruises

Alex is entering a new stage in life...the stage where he is constantly bumping and bruising! He gets so excited about walking that he sometimes gets going too fast and falls forward. Mostly he has his hands out front to catch him, but sometimes not. Then he ends up with a big bump on hardwood floor and a bruise on his forehead. Poor baby. He recovers quickly, but I hurt for him every time I hear a bump. Every bump is followed by some cuddles from Mommy, a pat on the bottom, and the encouragement, "you're okay." He is surprisingly unmoved by his little bumps and keeps trucking along everywhere he goes. His newest thing is climbing the stairs of the jungle gym at the park and sliding down the slide all by himself. (with close supervision from Mommy or Daddy, of course.)

A couple more little interesting facts about Alex these days... He still eats just about anything we put in front of him. I am thankful for this trait of his because it makes life much easier for me. He eats whatever we are eating. He has also learned to eat off a plate on the table instead of his high chair tray. In fact, he doesn't use the high chair tray anymore, just his booster and the table - such a big boy! He says, "mama", "dada", "nana" (banana), "dog", "ball", and "tractor" (yes, I know that's random, but for some reason he like the word tractor!) His words are not super clear yet, but Mommy and Daddy always know what he's trying to say. One last thing that's funny these days - Alex is very scheduled in his dirty diaper habits. He dirties his diaper exactly 4 minutes after his breakfast each day, and 6 minutes after dinner. I'm not even joking. He also needs a little privacy to do his business, so we let him hang out in his room for a couple of minutes after each meal. He always gets the job done as scheduled.

We are enjoying Alex so much these days as it seems like he is learning so much at this age. Everyday is full of new discoveries for him and we love that he is learning and growing so much. He brings a lot of joy and laughter to our house!

A Lion in the Mirror

When I took Alex out for his Halloween photo shoot, I wondered how he would respond when he saw himself in the mirror. He wasn't as fascinated as I thought he'd be (he was more concerned about touching the off-limits fire extinguisher next to the mirror), but he did seem to like looking at his lion costume. He loves to get super close to the mirror to make faces and give kisses. So cute.

Happy Halloween to all!

Baby #2 will be a Texan.

Many of you may have heard, but if you haven't yet, we have some good news. We are moving to Houston around December 1. Jason has been offered a great new job at Texas Children's Hospital and we are excited to make this move. The job will be a 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. schedule with NO holidays, NO weekends, NO overnights, and NO call. Can I hear a collective hallelujah?! We are especially thrilled that we have many friends in Houston and will be closer to our families.

Of course, the news isn't without a bit of sadness. We have LOVED our life in Des Moines. God has been good to provide for us wonderful friends, our first home, and two fabulous first years of marriage. Alex was born here, (in the hospital across the street from our house) so Des Moines will always hold a special place in our hearts. Not to mention that we have so many marvelous friends. We are hoping they will consider trips to Houston - after all, in the middle of winter, we'll probably wearing shorts down there!

Thankfully, Texas Children's is moving us so we will have little worry about as far as moving. The movers will do all the packing and moving for us - another hallelujah from this pregnant mamma - and will meet us in Houston. If only they offered a guaranteed house-selling option, we'd take that too! We are grateful that so much has already fallen into place for the move and are looking forward to what's next.

Can't wait to see y'all in Texas soon!

p.s. I took this picture today - a day shy of 22 weeks - for all you pregnancy pic lovers!

Speaking of teeth

Speaking of teeth, Alex has been using his new pearly whites to chew the paint off of his crib. Actually, he hasn't stopped at the paint...he's working his way through the wood too! Let's just hope he's not one of those kids in the future that is known as "one who ate a lot of paint chips as a kid"...

So much for this crib being an heirloom!
